Chasing Harmony in a World Obsessed with Hustle
Growing up, I was exposed to the glorified version of “success”—that relentless grind, the image of late nights, skipped meals, and making sacrifices on the altar of achievement. It seemed that everywhere I looked, the message was the same: if you aren’t hustling, you must not want it badly enough.
When I looked up the word “hustle,” I was struck by how forceful it sounded: to move hurriedly or unceremoniously, to obtain by forceful action.
And yet, hustle was everywhere. Movies like The Devil Wears Prada or shows like Scandal planted the seed: you can have it all if you just work yourself to the bone.
But that kind of hustle never appealed to me, especially after having children. I would constantly find myself thinking, “There has to be a better way”.
As a Christian mompreneur working from home, that thought has grown louder, aligning with the realization that God designed us, not for frantic striving, but for lives marked by peace, presence, and purpose. It’s the antithesis of hustle culture.
So let’s talk about anti-hustle culture—what it really means, how it challenges the world’s narrative, and the freedom it offers to women who refuse to choose between their dreams and their families.
The Hidden Cost of Hustle Culture
Let’s be honest: hustle culture doesn’t just demand effort—it demands everything. Our time, our relationships, sometimes even our health.
Why is this? Society has long celebrated the woman who “does it all”—the perfect mom who still manages to excel at work without missing a beat. But what’s less visible are the stories of burnout and broken relationships that can follow when we set impossible standards.
Looking back, I can see how the relentless chase can shift into self-abandonment. Take the example of Monica’s mother in the movie Love & Basketball. She sacrificed her dreams for her family, expecting gratitude—only to realize that her daughter never asked for such a sacrifice. Many women hustle not just for themselves, but out of a feeling of obligation, losing themselves along the way.
Redefining Success Through a Faith Lens
What if we dared to question those old definitions? Turning to Scripture, nowhere did I find instructions to hustle, to exhaust myself or to prove my worth through productivity. What I found was so freeing. Scripture doesn’t tell us to hustle. It tells us to be diligent.
- “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:” -Ecclesiastes 3:1 KJ
- “The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.” -Proverbs 12:24
- “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.” -Proverbs 22:29
When I looked up the Hebrew meanings of diligent, it translated to words like “skilled,” “prompt,” “sharp,” and “ready.” Nothing about burnout. Nothing about overworking. Just intentional, wise, faithful effort, stewardship, AND rest.
Embracing Anti-Hustle Culture
So what does anti-hustle actually look like?
It’s not laziness. Nor is it giving up. It’s choosing peace over pressure.
Anti-hustle means moving at a pace that honors your season. It’s being strategic, not frantic. It’s building a business that supports your family, not one that steals you from them. It’s trusting that obedience and diligence—not endless, unreasonable sacrifice—are enough.
