How Motherhood Transformed My Business

Isn’t it amazing how life can take us on unexpected journeys? I was an entrepreneur before I ever embraced the beautiful chaos of motherhood, and let me tell you, the transition wasn’t exactly as seamless as I imagined. I thought my daughter would be my little sidekick, hanging out and napping while I crushed my to-do list. Reality check? She had other plans.

As the primary caregiver, with both my children at home and no daycare, I had to reinvent my approach to business. Exclusively breastfeeding added another layer of complexity, leaving me constantly on call. Imagine attempting to conduct meetings with a baby who thought “quiet time” meant digging into plant pots. It was a whirlwind.

Adapting to New Rhythms

Time becomes so precious when you’re balancing business and parenting. Before motherhood, my time was my own. All-nighters? Sure, why not? But after motherhood, my day revolved around my littles’ needs. My work hours had to fit within nap times or after bedtime, and instead of long stretches behind a desk, I shifted to focused work blocks.

The capacity to work seemingly endless hours was replaced with the necessity of being even more productive in shorter periods; and I began to see how much time I used to waste. You’d think juggling a business with two kids would decrease productivity, but it did the opposite.

Energy and Focus

Before kids, I was a champion of the “power through” strategy—working late into the night, pushing through fatigue. Motherhood forced me to respect my limits, to prioritize rest to function not only in business but for my family. And let’s be clear: rest is productive! Numerous times, sleep has turned a night task that was dragging into an easy job in the morning.

Motherhood also taught me the value of focus. No longer could I afford to make everything a priority. I had to choose where my energy went, to release activities that didn’t serve my goals or family. Business became a part of my life, not the center, allowing faith and family to take the lead.

Boundaries and Systems: The Game Changers

One key to thriving in this intersection of business and motherhood has been setting boundaries. Clear work hours keep me present with my kids without the distraction of business tasks. It’s not always perfect. I’ve learned the hard way what taking calls during playtime can lead to. But those learning experiences strengthened my resolve to honor the boundaries I set.

Systems, more than ever, became my friends. My natural gifting and background in Administration gave me a leg up, sure, but the real test was family life. Systems for both business and daily life are crucial—it’s not enough to have them at work alone. These structures have kept us running smoothly, allowing me to manage both my ambitions and family with grace.

A Season of Grace

To any mom in the thick of it, juggling business and motherhood, I see you. Whether you’re navigating the toddler years, guiding teenagers, or preparing for college departures, give yourself grace. Every phase is just a season. Do what aligns with your family, your values, and the path you’re called to walk.

My journey has been—and continues to be—a delicate dance of meeting business demands while nurturing the most important role of all: motherhood. I’d love to hear your stories and learn from your experiences too. Let’s chat about how motherhood has shaped your entrepreneurial journey.
